The project depends on the help of volunteers all year round. However, during the summer there are a lot of intake of turtles so this is when most of the help is needed. Depending on your skills/interests, you will be involved in a number of areas. You may be involved in:

• Cleaning turtle tanks.
• Weighing turtles to monitor health
• Feeding the turtles.
• Education presentations
• Delivering activities to group (public awareness).
• Help with fundraising activities
• General maintenance and upkeep of the project: this includes sweeping/mopping, cutting grass, tidying workspaces, preparing materials for staff and volunteers.

As a volunteer you will help the staff clean,  health checks and keep the center going.  We would try to have you work in all aspects of turtle care so you would get the most out of this. 

• Required to commit to a minimum of 4 weeks
• An interest in Conservation of native wildlife (especially reptiles) is essential. Must be able to work under the guidance of the wildlife rehabilitators. Must be responsible for working their designated shifts or find replacement to cover for you if unable to work shift. Extreme Weather (heat & cold), dirt and living in a remote area must be something you can handle. Volunteers must remember that they are representatives of the project and should act in a professional manner when dealing with the public.  Remember that we count on the public for support; they must be treated courteously and with respect at all times.
• NO SMOKING is allowed on the property.
• Strong work ethics are required: reliable, responsible, honest, good sense of humour, dependable, physically and mentally fit.
• Age: 18+
• No animal allergies
• Proof of current tetanus shot & medical insurance; Good physical stamina and health
• A love for animals and some general experience of caring for an animal is a must! Patient and comfortable around turtles. Must be able to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Must read and agree to abide by guidelines and ethics of the project. Good communication skills and the ability to work independently. Good knowledge of the English and Good problem solving skills.Knowing the difference between when to take initiative and when to ask for help are key. Must be able to pay keen attention to detail. A valid driver’s license would be an asset, but is not required. Police clearance.

  All year round. In summer great hiking at the local mountains and lakes and in the winter to visit one of the local skiing areas. The project needs your help all year round.

  Good, In the nearby surrounds are many opportunities to see wildlife like bald eagles, squirrels, Raccoons, skunks, deer, coyotes.

Day 1 - Arrive in Toronto, Canada;
You will arrive in beautiful Toronto where you will be transferred to your host family.
For 4 - 8 weeks - Help, rescue and rehabilitate injured Turtles!
For the next few weeks, you will help the local volunteers and staff at the project to run the daily operation of the center and give every animal there another chance at survival.
Your last day - You will fly back home or take the opportunity to travel through Canada. Our staff will gladly help you to book any tours to see more of this great country. If you would like to visit Vancouver or Toronto; we can help you with both short and longer term accommodation. 

Your Homestay accommodation will be arranged by Fronteering near the volunteer project.
Homestay: live with a Canadian family and includes your own bedroom, laundry facility in the house, wireless internet, cable tv and 3 meals a day. Of course you can also make use of the living room, kitchen and washroom. It’s a great way to improve your English.

Things to bring from home

• Clothes for cold temperatures as well as for summer for warm temperatures. Make sure these clothes are allowed to get dirty. Make sure to bring gloves, a toque and warm socks with you. Jeans and T-shirts can work in the summer.
• Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and you should also pack a raincoat and some sun block
• Linen and towels will be provided.

Location

The volunteer project is in Selwyn, Ontario close to Peterborough. There are lots of community events that goes on throughout the year. There’s a zoo, many parks and trails nearby and in the summer, small music venues. During your days off, explore the small community or you have the great opportunity to explore Toronto and even Oshawa.
