The Experience

Planning a trip to the United States? How about making your trip worthwhile by becoming a volunteer? Come now and take part in this amazing volunteering opportunity to nurture, care and rehabilitate wildlife at our Texas Wildlife Care project located in Houston, Texas! 

Since 1979, Texas Wildlife Care has been committed to providing quality emergency care and rehabilitation for injured, ill and orphaned wildlife brought to in by the public. Through education, and engaging the public in wildlife-care programs, the project continues to make a difference for urban wildlife threatened by loss of habitat.

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to learn new skills and enhance your knowledge on wildlife care. The work with the wildlife on the center can be physically demanding and it is by no means an ‘easy holiday option’ therefore, volunteer for a minimum of 4 weeks and help provide quality care & rehab, release and awareness to the public.   • Average Work hours
    Volunteers should work 25 hours – 40 hours a week. The program is open from 6am – 11pm, Monday through Sunday. Volunteer will be able to turn in a preferred work schedule.

  • Who Are They Looking For?
    Love of the outdoors and a passion for wildlife is a priority. You should not be fussy, picky or hypersensitive about cleaning as this is one of the main chores.  We will not tolerate smoking, alcohol or the use of drugs. Please remember that you are a guest, therefore, respecting the rules is essential.

    • Airport Pickup

      You will need to fly into either Houston Airports, Hobby or George Bush. There your host family will have you picked up and transferred to your accommodation. In the event that they are unable to do so, we would recommend you take a cab, Uber or shuttle (Book with http://www.supershuttle.com).
    • Accommodation and Meals
      You will be accommodated by a local host family where you will have your own private bedroom containing a toilet & bath along with a closet and desk. Linen will be provided, and Wi-Fi is provided at the homestay as well. At the homestay, two meals a day will be provided throughout your entire stay, there is also a fully equipped kithen at your disposal if you choose to prepare your own meals.

  • RESPONSIBILITIES
    Volunteers at Texas Wildlife Care are the backbone of the organization. They supply the main force behind the project's mission to rehabilitate, release and provide education to the public. As a volunteer, you will actively participate in the daily routine of the sanctuary by participating in the following activities:
    • Clean animal habitats/enclosures and their surrounding areas;
    • To prepare and distribute formula and food for the animals;
    • Clean the food preparation areas before and after feeding;
    • Construction and maintenance of animal habitats;
    • Assist in educating and raising awareness to the public
  • TASKS AND DUTIES

    As a volunteer at the project you will need to be able to work in the outdoor Texas heat and be willing to learn how to handle wildlife while appreciating that they are wildlife. Animal care would include food preparation, cage cleaning, habitat and tank construction or maintenance. In some cases you will also be involve in other facets of the business such as; raising awareness to the public!

    • Required to commit to a minimum of 4 weeks.
    • You must respect and love animals;
    • You must be tolerant towards others and abide by all sanctuary rules;
    • You must welcome team work but also be able to work alone;
    • You must be able to speak and understand English;  
    • You must be of ages 17 or over.
    • No animal allergies.

  • Itinerary & Details
    Day 1 - Arrive in Houston, Texas, USA;
    You will arrive in Houston where you will be picked up by your host family and transferred to your accommodation close by to the project!
    For 4 or more – Help, rescue, care and rehabilitate injured animals while also providing awareness to the public!
    For the coming weeks you will have a great time working directly with many different kind of animals. 
    Your last day
    - you will be transferred back to the airport to take a flight back home. Of course, it is possible to extend your stay and travel around; we can help you with trips and/or accommodations you would like to arrange. 


  • Accommodation

    Volunteers will have a beautiful private furnished bedroom with attached bathroom. The room also has 2 closets, a desk, bookshelf storage, and flat screen TV. It also has small shelves for you to place family pictures, etc. You will share a large kitchen, living room, dining room and washer/dryer area with the host family. Internet access is also provided.

    Things to bring from home

    • Clothes for mild temperatures as well as for wet and very warm temperatures. Make these clothes are allowed to get dirty. You can also walk with; Sunglasses, hat or cap, sunscreen lotion, swimsuit and clothing.
    • Waterproof jacket, comfortable shoes (sneakers, sandals), spare glasses for those who wear them and camera.
    • Personal items. Linen and towels will be provided by the host family.

    Meals

    Two meals a day will be provided at the homestay. There is also a kitchen which you can use to prepare your own meals if you’d like to do that. The food offered is not vegetarian unless you specify your special dietary needs before you arrive, this includes special dietary needs for medical conditions.

    Location

    The Rehab Center is in Houston, Texas, which is about one-hour and a half away from the main City area. The center is based in a semi-rural area. Although rural, there are many stores, restaurants and densely populated areas nearby. 

    There are various opportunities in the area to go sightseeing, wildlife viewing in the many state parks and so much more Activities offered in Houston!
