Amazon, Guyana

$1600.00

The Experience

Did you ever dream of waking up to the magical concert of the Amazon jungle while working with local Amerindian communities in the amazing Amazon rainforest? Help train this Amerindian community in the three fields needed most: IT, Accounting and Eco-tourism/hospitality management to improve their Amerindian run eco-lodge and trips so that hopefully in the future more tourists will come and in return it will provide a alternative eco-friendly (unlike poaching) income for the whole village!

Work together with a local Amerindian Community by providing IT, Eco-tourism Management and Accounting training to help support the Amerindian run eco-lodge and village. Through these efforts we hope to improve the lodge and the number of tourists visiting.
If the rainforest is not given a sustainable value local people will be forced to rely on logging, mining or other damaging trades. If we do not act the rainforest, local Amerindian communities and all its amazing wildlife will be lost! Sign up now for this great cause and be part of Guyana while it is still unspoiled, and hopefully through our combined effort we will keep it this way!
Depending on your skills and experience, the projects you are involved in will be varied and could include anything from supporting the Eco-lodge with marketing and tourism management skills, helping teach children and adults valuable IT skills and teaching some of the staff the basics of accounting. This great volunteer abroad experience will lead you in the northern most frontier of the Amazon jungle in the southern reaches of South America’s only English speaking country; Guyana! Have the privilege to discover this country while it is still untouched with fascinating cultures to meet and mind blowing wildlife to view and sign up now for this great cause and be part of Guyana while it is still unspoiled, and hopefully through our combined effort we will keep it this way!

    • RESPONSIBILITIES

This unique experience will take you deep into the jungles of the Amazon. This is where Sir Walter Raleigh searched for El Dorado, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle dreamt up the stories of “The Lost World.” It is some of the most pristine and untouched primary jungle in the world and it needs your help! In order to prevent the threat of logging and mining in these precious areas, the local Amerindian communities need to build some eco-tourism infrastructure so that they can sensitively benefit from this incredible resource without destroying it.
Without the infrastructure there is no way to attract tourists to the area or to support them when they arrive. The communities do not have the resources to develop this infrastructure themselves which is where they need your support. With the time and skills of volunteers like you they have the opportunity to create facilities and activities for
Guyana is already starting to develop and tourism will increase. We want to ensure that this is done in the best way possible in order to protect the traditional way of life for Amerindian communities and also protect the precious tropical rainforest and it’s extraordinary biodiversity.
Some of the projects you could get involved in:

      • IT, Accounting and Tourism/hospitality management training
      • arranging activities and events for the children and youth
      • Wildlife monitoring programs
      • Assist the coordinator
      • Assist in a life changing volunteer projects to sustain the way of life of Amerindians and the Amazon jungle and its wildlife.
      • And many other projects to benefit the local Amerindian communities!

Our organization is keen to support conservation and community development within Guyana. Man is destroying many of the world's amazing places and it is only man that can save them. Unfortunately in this day and age that means giving everything a financial value. Rarely do people do the right thing just because it is the right thing, especially big companies. To them the jungle is a commodity; the lumber, medicinal products, animals, clearing the land for soya crops and so on, all have a massive value. Each year something like $26 billion is made from the jungle in the private sector. Conservation projects have only a few hundred million dollars to protect it each year; there is no way they are going to win in the long run with those odds.
Therefore, the jungle needs a value, which will keep the profit seekers happy without chopping it down. It needs to be sustainable. There are sustainable logging practices, animal extraction, fishing projects and so on around the world. They are not the norm as yet and their effectiveness is open to debate, however the organization is interested in one aspect, the benefits from sound eco-tourism. Without the jungle there will be no tourism of this kind, so we have to keep it intact, and help the local people develop in the manner they want to. Too many areas have far too many tourists, where local ways of life have been destroyed, and an amazing array of social ills imported and often the wildlife scared into hiding or worse.

      • TASKS AND DUTIES

Our organization is very keen to protect the environment where we work whilst at the same time assisting the local communities. They adhere to best practice in this area. There is a great deal of pressure to log, mine for gold or diamonds or export wild animals from the rainforest and with Guyana becoming better known, these pressures are increasing. There are a number of logging operations and a fair amount of illegal hunting and wildlife capture. A Scarlet Macaw is worth thousands of Dollars in the US, but will be bought for just a few dollars from the local guy who captures it in Guyana in the wild. This is inevitable as Western influences encroach in these environments; it is often the only way the local people can improve their lot, get better health care, better education and everything else that is often taken for granted. It is then a little hypocritical to ask them not to exploit their lands, just as we have for hundreds of years, and to give no alternative to allow their lifestyles to improve. We hope through our combined effort to offer lasting alternative options for these villages.

      • During this volunteer experience you will stay in hammocks and have the opportunity to be immersed in local life. Learn from these fascinating people about ancient legends, the medicinal properties of rare flora and extraordinary wildlife facts and sightings that you will find nowhere else. We concentrate on things that work, not that look fancy. This is the real stuff! Are you ready for a true adventure to learn about new cultures and live amongst a vast variety wildlife while saving the Amazon jungle and it’s people?

    Location

Guyana is a little smaller than Britain, with some 80 per cent of land covered in virginal tropical rainforest. After the jungle the main natural vegetation is savannah grassland, split into two distinct areas; one in the south west of the country, the second in the north east. The main population areas are along the coast, with some 90 per cent of the 750,000 population living there. This harks back to colonial days when the coastal port facilities were widely used for the transportation of goods. The difficulty of movement within the country also had a major impact on this statistic. Guyana is known as the land of many waters, it is criss-crossed with waterways and hundreds of waterfalls. The mouth of the Essequibo river is as wide as the English Channel and Kaieteur Falls is the longest single drop waterfall in the world at 741 feet.
