The Experience

Are you planning to take a trip? Why not travel to the breathtaking Madagascar where you the chance of becoming a volunteer! Get on to this exciting program and get involved in the conservation of endemic animal species! Here the Lemur is of focus.

In this exciting program, participants will be involved in and assigned with important tasks to maintain and preserve Madagascar’s wildlife heritage, by working with a private lemur species rehabilitation center. As a volunteer, you will first learn about Madagascar’s flagship species especially the ones which are endemic to this part of Madagascar, with other representatives of unique fauna like the Madagascar fish-eagle and Ploughshare tortoise. Preparing the lemurs’ morning and afternoon feed along with cleaning their cages comprise daily project activities.

This amazing island offers you a wonderful and unique experience in conserving the island’s precious fauna. The minimum duration offered is 1 week and the maximum duration is 4, however, we can extend your stay if you so desire.     Year round however, you should keep in mind that the project requires applicants to arrive on a  Sunday between 06:00 - 23:00! If applicants arrive on any other day, they will have to arrange their own transfers)

  • Who Are They Looking For?
    Individuals who have a passion for environment and is interested in conservation. Also if you are keen on doing field work or individual researches then this opportunity is perfect for you. Being hardworking, motivated, mature and initiative are some qualities you must possess and living in a remote area must be something you can handle. You must have a good knowledge of English and good communicating skills. We will not tolerate smoking, alcohol or the use of drugs. Please remember that you are a guest, therefore, respecting the rules of the project and the community is essential.

        Dorm Style arrangement based in the project base, there is a dining room, a lounge area where you can hang out with fellow participants and a beautiful garden to relax. A balcony and large roof terrace are also available for you to spend some quality time. Furthermore, there is a refrigerator which you are welcome to use to store food and beverages
      • Meals
        Three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) during the week and two meals (breakfast, dinner) during weekends. The meals are a mix of Western and Malagasy food, consisting mainly of vegetarian dishes including rice and vegetables. You can expect to have a chicken dish about twice a week. You can also use the kitchen facilities to cook for yourself or eat out at any of the local restaurants at your own expense!
      • Airport Pick + Drop off

        You need to fly into Fascene Airport (NOS), Nosy Be. After passing through customs and outside, our representative will be waiting for you at the arrival gate. Our transfer coordinator meets you at the meeting point at the airport upon your arrival and arranges your transfer to our accommodation in Ambondrona, Nosy Be. Our representative will be standing in the arrivals area with the name of the project or your name on a board. Please note, as soon as your flights are booked you must notify us with your flight details, so we can arrange for you to be picked up (flight number and airline are very important in case your flight is delayed, our staff then knows what time you will be arriving). Please be aware that Saturday morning 11:00 is check out time. Due to the many different personal plans and return flight times people have, we have found it logistically simpler to send participants to the nearest bus station or hire a taxi at your own cost and allow you to make your way; whether it is to do more travelling, continue on to nearby places, or return to the airport.

    • RESPONSIBILITIES

      Volunteers at the project are the core and backbone of the organization. They are the main force behind the project's mission to conserve and rehabilitate the Lemur Species in Madagascar. As a volunteer, you will actively participate in the daily routine of the facility by participating in the following activities:

      • Taking Lemurs out of cages before the day begins and putting them back at the end of the day!
      • While lemurs are out, cages must be thoroughly cleaned.
      • Collecting of fruits and green leaves for the lemurs is another task a volunteer would be designated to do.
      • Preparing their feed and feeding them.
      • Cutting grass, planting trees and other maintenance to the cage and surrounding area.
  • Requirements, Guidelines & Policies
    • Required to commit to a minimum of 1 week.
    • Must have an interest in the environment, animals and conservation.
    • All participants will require a certain level of fitness and must be able to do physical work. This program will not suit participants who are afraid of wild fauna and insects or don’t wish to do physical work. Must be motivated and take initiative.
    • Age: 17+ (Participants below 18 should have parental consent and participants above 65 should have medical clearance to take part in this program)
    • Must have Intermediate knowledge of the English language and confident in speaking it.
    • Participant who take part in the program should provide their resumes and passport copies at least 4 weeks prior to arrival in order to get their placements accepted. Participants are strictly advised to adhere to the rules and regulations of the park and any kind of breach of rules will not be tolerated.

  • Itinerary & Details
    Day 1 - Arrive in Madagascar;
    You need to fly into Fascene Airport (NOS), Nosy Be. After passing through customs and outside, our representative will be waiting for you at the arrival gate. Our transfer coordinator meets you at the meeting point at the airport upon your arrival and arranges your transfer to our accommodation in Ambondrona, Nosy Be. Our representative will be standing in the arrivals area with the name of the project or your name on a board. 
    For  1 - 4 Weeks – Work as a volunteer at our Lemur conservation project based in Madagascar.
    For a minimum of 1 week to a maximum stay of 4 weeks you will be volunteering in Madagascar by contributing to the rehabilitation of the lemur species which have been stolen of their natural habitats. 
    Your last day
    - You will be dropped off at a specific location where you can take a ride back to the airport to catch you plane back home or take the opportunity to travel through Madagascar. Our staff will gladly work with the project to help you book any tours to see more of this great country.

    Location

    This project is located in the rural areas of Madagascar. Wifi is unavailable for use so we recommend getting a SIM card for your mobile phone so that you have a way of making contacting with other volunteers, coordinators and your family. There are lots to do on days off such as hike, swimming, visiting the beaches and so much more!
