Always wondered what it would be like to volunteer in a hospital abroad? Travel to Ghana and assist in local hospitals where your help is very much needed! Ghana like many other countries in Africa has a shortage of medical personal.

This placement gives the volunteer an incredible opportunity to volunteer as a medical/health care assistant in Ghana! Join our community in Ghana where you will live with other volunteers in one of our 3 volunteer houses, learn from the locals and their way of life and volunteer with children to provide a better future. Included is a 2 day trip to Kakum National Park a lush tropical rainforest home to elephants, monkeys and bongo's!

    • Responsibilities & Tasks

      For a duration of 4- 8 weeks you will assist at a medical/health care assistant in Accra the capital of Ghana. You will volunteer with local people to provide the care needed within local hospital who receive thousands of patients each year. Tasks that you can get involved in:

      • GP – Vital signs such as Blood Pressure, Pulse, Respiration, temperature and Weight.
      • Obs Gynae – Assisting the Doctor to perform abdominal scans and trans-vaginal scans. Theatre- Assisting scrub nurse in setting trays for various procedures.rub nurse.
      • Labor – Assisting in delivery, antenatal and postnatal clients Medical and Surgical Ward – Pre and Postnatal care.
      • Assisting in the administration of medications. Keep in mind that experience with medical/health care is required.
  • Requirements, Guidelines & Policies
    • Experience related to Medical or health care required
    • Strong work ethics are required: reliable, responsible, honest, good sense of humor and dependable.
    • You must be physically and mentally fit.
    • 17 years of age or older
    • Must have an interest in other cultures
    • Make sure to contact your local health organization to inquire about the needed/recommended vaccinations and medicine.

    • Wildlife viewing
      Great for bird watching as many birds migrate through Ghana. In the Southern jungles there is rainforest wildlife like the Diana monkey, the bongo and the Grey Parrot. In the Northern savannahs you can encounter elephants, crocodiles, hippo, buffalo and if you are lucky lions!
  • Itinerary & Details
    Day 1 - Arrive in Ghana;
    You will arrive in the capital of Ghana where you will be met and transferred to your accommodation.
    For 4 -8 weeks Volunteer as a medical assistant
    For the coming weeks you will enjoy living in Ghana and assisting with Medical Care.
    Your last day
    - you will travel back home and we will arrange your transport to the airport. Our staff will gladly help you to book any tours to see more of this great country or help you extend.
  • Accommodation

    We have 3 volunteer Houses available. The rooms are shared dormitory with 2 to 6 volunteers per room. The volunteers sleep in bunk beds. Every house has a huge living room with dining area. Here the volunteers can enjoy their meals and free-time together.
    Beside the living room there are in each house as well other communal areas, mostly as well outside the house like huge terraces, balconies and of course the garden area. Of course there is as well a fully equipped kitchen, where the volunteers can prepare their food together. Every house has a good number of toilets and bathrooms. All Houses are within easy reach of local markets and internet cafes. Two of our houses are near to the amazing beach. One House is located near to the centre. The projects are within walking distance or within 20 to 40 minutes drive by trotro. The participants can enjoy their stay in Ghana together with like-minded people, can exchange their experiences, plan their weekend-trips in the country together and have a lot of fun!

    Meals

    You will need to source and prepare your own meals while on this placement. Local food is available from markets and shops which you can buy for approximately 5 US$ a day. We organize as well on a regular basis, cooking lessons to let the volunteers enjoy typical Ghanaian meals.

    Location

    Accra is the capital and it is the cultural and commercial center of the country. You can find there hip life, chop bars and as well gourmet restaurants. Accra with its low-rise skyline is also called as well “Africa for beginners”..
