The Experience

Come now and enjoy the picturesque Children’s Autism & Horse Therapy Ranch, nestled among the rolling hills of beautiful southern Mississippi! Here you have an amazing opportunity to volunteer at a 200‐acre ranch (with an additional 800 acre to ride or hike on) and spend all day around amazing horses!

In addition to that, you’ll also be working alongside an amazing team all working towards a worthwhile cause of ranch therapy, making a difference for kids with special needs. The Children’s Autism & Horse Therapy focuses on helping all children with autism and other special needs and is free to every child that is in dire need of some help. This method done by the project has proven over the years to produce good results however, with a little help form you we can make an even bigger positive impact on the lives of these kids!

Your role as a volunteer will be incorporated in the daily work on the ranch. You will be involved in the care of the horses and other therapy animals such as; cats, dogs and goats including the maintenance of their surrounding/environment and you’ll also assist in the therapy sessions. Volunteer work means plenty of time around and together with the horses but it is important to keep in mind that this program is not a "riding camp". Instead it is about making sure the therapy horses and other therapy animals gets the best possible care so they are ready for their work with the kids and as a bonus you get to go on one trail ride every week!

    It is important to keep in mind that you are on a ranch with many horses and other animals and they all need to be fed and cared for on daily basis. In general, you will be working 6 days a week, 8 hours per day. From Mondays-Saturdays, Sundays will be your days off.

  • Who Are They Looking For?
    Love of the outdoors and a passion for animals is a priority. You should not be fussy, picky or hypersensitive about cleaning and getting your hands dirty as this is one of the main chores.  We will not tolerate smoking, alcohol or the use of drugs. Please remember that you are a guest, therefore, respecting the rules is essential. In general, persons who are passionate about horses and other animals as well as someone who is patient and understanding!

    • Airport Pickup

      Volunteers will need to fly to MSY (Louis Armstrong Airport, New Orleans). On your arrival, someone from the project will be waiting for you at the airport and will then transfer you to your accommodation on the project site.
    • Accommodation
      Volunteers will be staying in shared bedrooms together with other volunteers and get the chance to meet and make new friends for life as well as getting an unbelievable experience with great chances of team work.
    • Meals
      For breakfast, you will prepare this on your own from a selection of options like bread, ham, cheese, coffee, tea, juice, porridge, oats, yoghurt, cereals, fruits, etc. Lunch is prepared by the staff members on the ranch but you as a volunteer will be helpful in the kitchen on a rolling schedule. Dinner will be done as it did for the lunch period. It is important to note that if you have allergies or specific requirements about your diet, we will be happy to take care of that on inquiry!
    • Horse Riding
      Volunteers will be granted permission to go on one trail ride every week.
    • Ongoing service
      If there are any problems with your volunteer project we are always there to help you and mediate between yourself and the organization.
    • Tours
      Through FRONTEERING you have the possibility to book tours in the USA after you have finished your volunteer project.

  • RESPONSIBILITIES

    Volunteers play a key role in assisting the project with its objectives and as such, your main tasks will mainly consist out of the following but are not limited to:
    • Groom and care for the horses
    • Care for the small therapy animals such as; dogs, cats and goats
    • Assist during therapy sessions
    • Cleaning the stalls and out side pens
    • Feeding the horses
    • Fencing such as repairing or building new fence
    • Mowing the lawn or other gardening chores
    • Other tasks to keep the facilities in good condition
  • Tasks & Duties

    As a volunteer, you will be incorporated in the daily work on the ranch. You will be part of the team who makes sure that the horses are well taken care of, handled properly and stays healthy. You will also care for the other therapy animals such as the cats, dogs and goats. You are also responsible for making sure that the animals’ surroundings are clean and that they have everything they need. During therapy sessions with the kids you are assisting with things like leading the horses, helping the kids up and down on the horse and helping them with balance.

  • Itinerary & Details
    Day 1 - Arrive in the Mississippi, USA;
    Volunteers will need to fly to MSY (Louis Armstrong Airport, New Orleans). On your arrival, someone from the project will be waiting for you at the airport and will then transfer you to your accommodation on the project site.
    For 1- 4 weeks or more – Care for Horse & other animals and assisting with therapy sessions for kids with special needs!
    For the coming weeks you will have a wonderful time working with a Horses and other therapy animals and providing assistance therapy sessions for kids with special needs! 
    Your last day
    - You will be transferred back to the airport to take a flight back home. Of course, it is possible to extend your stay in and travel around; we can help you with trips and/or accommodation.

    Volunteers will be staying in shared bedrooms together with other volunteers and get the chance to meet and make new friends for life as well as getting an unbelievable experience with great chances of team work.

    Things to bring from home

    • Clothes for mild temperatures as well as for summer for warm temperatures. Make sure that these clothes are allowed to get dirty. Jeans and long sleeves are most suitable for working and a comfortable working shoes/boot.
    • Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and you should also pack a raincoat and some sun block. Riding gear provided.
    • Linen and towels will be provided.

    Meals

    Breakfast - You prepare your own breakfast from a selection of options like bread, ham, cheese, coffee, tea, juice, porridge, oats, yoghurt, cereals, fruits, etc.

    Lunch - The lunch is prepared by the staff members on the ranch but you as a volunteer will be helpful in the kitchen on a rolling schedule.

    Dinner - Same will be done as it did for the lunch period.
